How to fast-charge your iPhone or iPad using a standard USB port
Back in January I wrote about the "inconvenient truth" of trying to charge your iPad from a USB port : there's not enough juice.
My recommendation at the time was Digital Innovations' ChargeDr, a USB dongle that allows tablets and other devices to charge more quickly. It works (quite well, in fact), but it's a $30 solution.
If you fancy free workarounds instead, check out Asus Ai Charger . This free utility promises to charge iPhones, iPods, and iPads up to 50 percent faster using your PC's existing USB ports.
That's a pretty lofty claim: software that can boost the effective power output of hardware? It sounds almost impossible, but I'm here to tell you: it works.
I tested Asus Ai Charger on my HP Pavilion dm1z laptop. After installation, it adds an icon to the Windows System Tray, one that shows a red X until you plug in your iDevice. (Curiously, it works only with Apple products—I'm not sure why.)
Interestingly, that icon does absolutely nothing when you mouse over it or click it. The only thing that changes it is plugging your phone or tablet, at which point the X is replaced by a charge indicator.
Although I don't have the necessary electronics to measure this, Asus Ai Charger somehow enables a USB port to produce around 1 amp of power, nearly doubling the 0.5 amps of a typical USB port.
Satechi 10-Port USB 3.0 Hub
It looks like a power strip.
On top it has nine USB ports split into three groups of three. It also has three power switches (one for each group of three ports). The power switches keep the hub from leaking energy when you’re not using them to power gadgets .
Each group of three ports has a glowing blue LED light when the power switch is on. Each individual port also has its own LED light that comes on when the port is charging or powering a device.
A 10th port on one end of the Satechi hub is more powerful to charge an iPad. iPad chargers can charge other devices faster so you could use it to charge something else when you’re in a rush. The 10th port has its own power switch too.
The Satechi 10-Port USB 3.0 Hub looks bigger than it is in the photo. It is 8.69″ long, 1.75″ wide, and 1.06″ tall. You can get a better sense of the size if you take a look at the video below.
To use the hub, your computer needs to have a USB 3.0 port. USB 3.0 has the same connector as previous USB standards, but it provides much faster file transfer speed and is more power efficient. It’s 10 times faster than Hi-Speed USB.

Can I use an Ipad camera USB adaptor to plug in a regular USB?
Will the adaptor recognise any other data file that goes through it besides pictures? I'm looking for a way to use my USB stick to download and upload documents directly to/from my iPad 2.
You can always email the documents you want to transfer to the ipad. Doing it this way, you can simply access the email account you sent the documents to, then open them up in a PDF app reader like GoodReader.
