Commentary: At the end of the day, there's nothing like NHL playoffs

What if someone doesn’t step up? What if they prefer to do whatever it is they must do from a sitting position, or from the step they currently occupy? If they do “step up,” is that the end of it? Is there anything else to accomplish after they climb one more stair? Or is that it, just the stepping motion?

Lots of other colloquialisms have come and gone, for better or worse. Safe to say those of us who drive compact sedans were happy to see “keep on truckin’” fade. “Gag me with a spoon” seemed particularly graphic and unpleasant. Older readers may remember the expression “you bet your sweet bippy,” then do their best to forget it again.

In deference to my wife, “stone cold fox” will remain on the active list.

Sports are a breeding place for catch phrases and the most popular expression being used in these NHL playoffs seems to be “at the end of the day.” It’s the American Express card of hockey rinks, accepted everywhere. Coaches, players, team executives, Zamboni drivers ... no one leaves home without it.

For the uninitiated, it’s not unlike the “yada yada yada” phrase from Seinfeld. It can be applied to every situation, segue into anything.

How A 17-Year-Old Girl Won a Hackathon – And What It Means for Women in Tech

At this past weekend’s TVnext Hack event , a loose consortium of geeks, hackers, and businessmen from the television and technology industries gathered in a high-rise Boston office building to compete for cash and prizes by inventing and building technologies that add to the experience of watching television.

Several hacks won prizes from sponsor companies, while five of the best scored “best in breed” prizes ( view the full list ). Out of those, one was chosen as the grand prize winner on Monday at the TVnext Summit : Twivo, a clever hack that lets you watch DVR-ed television programs without worrying about your “second screen” ruining the show when you check Twitter only to see the show’s ending given away. Simply enter the name of the show, and Twivo (short for “Twitter for TiVo”) will block all mentions of it from your Twitter feed, while also syncing your Twitter feed so that tweets show up when they would have during the show’s original airing.

Twivo was created by the only female participant at the event — and the only minor. Unless memory fails, the only other females in attendance, that I saw anyway, were an organizer, two camerawomen, a caterer, three judges, and a participant’s wife.

iSuppli: Tablet competitors can't compete with iPad's design
For example, Apple even uses its own applications processor design in both the iPad and iPad 2. In contrast, Android tablet makers buy those capabilities from the likes of Nvidia, Texas Instruments and Qualcomm. How long will it be before I can easily find an iPad 2 (At&t, 32gb) in the Boston area?

Best Buy would be ideal. They get like a few per day and are always sold out. I have no interest in showing up way early and lining up. I want to walk in at 2pm and just buy one.

How to get an iPad 2 in Boston?

Does anyone know of a way for me to get an iPad 2 without waiting in line for 5 hours at the apple store. I waited outside the Boylston store this morning but the scalpers (who told me that they plan on selling it on the black market in foreign countries)

Easton Woman Says Recently Purchased iPad Is A Fake « CBS ...

BROCKTON (CBS) -  An Easton woman is looking for answers after the iPad she bought at a Walmart store turned out to be a fake.

Suzanne Nassie knew something was wrong as soon as she opened the shrink wrapped package she bought at the Brockton Walmart on Sunday.

“This isn’t even a real device,” Nassie said. “Somebody put a phony device in that box.”

Nassie said there was no cord and the device wouldn’t turn on so she brought it back to the store.

But Nassie was never allowed to speak with a manager and was refused a refund even though she had a $499 sales slip dated 20 minutes earlier.

She was told she would need to contact Apple.

That’s when she discovered even more problems with the device.

“There’s a speaker that’s suppose to be on the back, it’s just little painted dots. When I peered inside at the port on the back where you’re suppose to charge it, it’s just plastic. No metal prongs or anything of that nature.”

But apparently this isn’t the first time it has happened. WBZ-TV found fake iPads have also reportedly been sold at Walmart stores in New Jersey, Florida and Texas.

Drinking Boston, A History of the City and Its Spirits

Stephanie Schorow serves up a remarkable cocktail representative of Bostons intoxicating story: its spirit of invention, its hardscrabble politics, its mythology, and the citys never-ending battle between personal freedom and civic reform.

What We Know about Climate Change

What We Know about Climate Change

Offers an introduction to the scientific consensus on the human role in global warming.
About this book
"This book argues that in spite of extreme views in the media, reasonable scientists agree that human activity has significantly increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (dramatically so since the 1970s), and that there is good reason for concern. Kerry Emanuel explains the basic science of global warming to non-experts and shows why it is very difficult to predict when it will have a dramatic effect on the climate. Nonetheless, change will come. Emanuel warns of more intense hurricanes, flooding, and the advancing of deserts, and he calls for urgent action to reduce greenhouse gases. He also blasts the media for underreporting the dangers of global warming: in search of a "balanced" story, journalists have turned to extremists in the scientific...
