Collaboratively produced, an iPad writing app dubbed ‘Outline Pro’ by creators Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart and IT Launchpad, lets writers create detailed outlines and makes it easy to organize their introduction, body and conclusion paragraphs. It promotes collaboration with teachers and peers with full Dropbox and Google Drive integration and exports PDF, text and OPML files to use with other apps. Outline Pro also lets users cite sources, track word counts and provides templates for papers, essays and speeches.
RESULTS OF THE CLASSROOM PILOT
Outline Pro was piloted with Princeton Academy’s 7th and 8th grade English classes under the direction of English teacher Matt Trowbridge. Since Mr. Trowbridge’s first homework assignment to his students using the new app, Outline Pro has been a major success at improving the writing quality of students at Princeton Academy.
“Students at every level have improved in their writing as a result of using this app. Those who already had sound structure have improved their transition and flow from paragraph to paragraph.
Phonics is the primary way in which children learn basic literacy at schools in England and Wales. Phonics is all about the sounds that each letter, and letter combination, makes. These sounds are identified and manipulated into letters and words.
Phonics is widely regarded as the quickest and most effective way of teaching young children to read, write and spell - plus, it's enjoyable to boot.
Thanks to the intuitive nature of the iPad, it's a great way to introduce your children to learning, and there are hundreds of great educational tools in the App Store. In this roundup, we'll be looking at six of the best phonics apps, primarily aimed at children aged from three to six years.
Words that you'll come across in phonics include the likes of phonemes and graphemes. These can be intimidating to the uninitiated, but - for the main - they can essentially be viewed as the simplest building blocks of spoken (phoneme) and written (grapheme) language.
It's not particularly helpful to use terms such as these in the context of an app, but they work their way into a number of the apps we've reviewed (so it's worth having a quick read of the phonics Wikipedia page before getting started).

Finding apps isn’t difficult. Finding education apps is only a bit more challenging. Finding free education apps is also possible. Finding free education apps worth downloading is a different story entirely.
The following is our list for the 55 best apps for learning we can find. Some are formal learning–math drilling and phonics, for example–while others are RSS readers, social media platforms, and the like. These are purposely not all purely academic, “training” apps that focus on individual skills, but rather the an array of apps students could use daily to improve their ability to think, connect, and use information.
A few notes:
1. Some may require in-app purchases, but we tried to limit these. We also tried to limit how many “lite/free” versions of more robust paid apps we included. We wanted the list to be as truly free as possible for you to use.
2. Some of these we included a brief statement of why you should use the app, while others we included developer commentary.
3. They are numbered, but are in no certain order.
